Opera for Middle and High School Students

The Opera Guild offers several programs each year which appeal to middle and high school students.

In 2009, over 16,000 San Antonio sctudents and their teachers/chaperones attended an opera performance free of charge as part of the Guild's Opera in the Schools programs.

Each year, the Opera Guild gives a substantial donation to the San Antonio Opera  and helps to support UTSA's Lyric Theatre to make their exciting productions available  to area students.

Gilbert and Sullivan's rollicking "Pirates of Penzance" will be offered on October 8, 2009 at the Buena Vista Theatre on the downtown UTSA campus.  This operetta, produced by UTSA's Lyric Theatre, will be at 10am. The production will feature colorful costumes and sets.

UTSA's Lyric Theatre will stage a world premiere of the comedic opera, "A Brief History of Root Vegetables " at the Buena Vista Theatre on the downtown UTSA campus.   This opera buffa will be performed on March 4 and March 8, 2010 at 10am.The opera is a costumed and fully staged performance with orchestra.

Teacher’s guides are provided for all operas in advance of the production. These are professionally written and follow the TEKS guidelines. Students who attend the opera productions also receive CD’s or DVD’s of the opera for use in the classroom.

All performances must be reserved in advance. If you would like additional information on these operas,  please contact us at education@operaguildsa.org.
